  1. Organise your life

In functional CVs, you put your skills into categoriesthen briefly list past job titles at the bottom. These are suitable for those who have been unemployed for long periods, held different types of jobs in the past, changed jobs too frequently, are returning to work after a long period or who wish to change career.

Recent graduates and others on a consistentcareer path usually optfor the chronologicalformat. These CVs list your jobs and duties for each in reverse chronological order.

  2. Categorize your achievements

When doing up a chronological CV, you should outlinesections of your experience, education and skills to show what you’ve accomplished. HR personnel and employers take less than a minute to scanyour CV, so it’s imperativeto highlight and organize items into several conciseand relevant segments.

If you’re a recent graduate and therefore have not yet been employed, put your Education section first. In addition to the basics – university name, degree and graduation date – you can include relevant coursework, honors or awards.

Other categories might include Relevant Work Experience, Volunteer Experience, Computer Skills, Publications, Activities, Language Skills and so on.

In these challenging times, so many resumes come in for a single job opening that companies have trouble finding the best candidate. Also, interested applicants have difficulty getting their resume in front of someone that will invite them to an interview. A successful resume is one that gets you through the door, generating a job interview for you. Once you are in the building, you take your best shot at winning that job.

Employers are looking for the BEST FIT. They have a problem and they need to solve it quickly. They will only take a few seconds to look at your resume and they will quickly determine if youre worth their time to talk to.

From my experience, these are the most common problems with the resume:

CAREER OBJECTIVE - People like to announce their career objective and aspirations on the top of their resume. We have been led to believe that this shows you to be a highly motivated and ambitious individual. This is a mistake. The decision maker is wasting valuable seconds reading about your career objective and may move on to the next resume. No one cares about your career objective. Nobody cares. NOBODY. The decision maker has a problem and they want the answer to just one simple question, "CAN YOU HELP ME SOLVE IT?"

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY - The recruiter or the decision maker will quickly glance over the job descriptions of your previous jobs, looking for commonalities, similar skills or experience that match the job opening that youre applying for. If your job description doesnt clearly show that, its over. Youre done.

Here is a quick and easy way to correct it, improving your chances of getting a phone call:

Replace Career Objective with QUALIFICATIONS - The recruiter or decision maker is looking for someone that closely matches the job opening so make it easy for them by listing all of skills and experience at the very top of your resume. If they want to read the rest of your resume, they can, but they dont have to. You told them everything they needed to know. You gave them what they were looking for. If the position requires a certain level of experience in a particular skill (ex: 5 years of customer service experience), add up all of your years of customer service experience from every job youve had and list it in bullet points. If a college degree is required, list it here. If you think a particular skill is helpful (ex: fluent in Cantonese), list it here.

  For example:

  Qualifications:

  Bachelors degree

7 years of customer service experience

3 years of outside sales experience

  Fluent in Spanish

6 years of healthcare experience, etc...

  Hope this helps!

If you’re sending out résumés and not getting many calls to interview, there’s a good chance that your résumé is the problem. If you’re like most people, your résumé could use some work – and like most people, you’re probably not sure where to start.

But you probably don’t need to start from scratch. You can often significantly improve your résumé by just making a handful of changes. Here are five small changes you can make that will have a big impact.

  1. Get rid of the objective. Résumé objectives never help and often hurt. Not only do they feel outdated at this point, but theyre all about what you want, rather than what the employer wants. Your résumé should be focused on showing your experience, skills and accomplishments. It’s not the place to talk about what you’re seeking in your next job.

  2. Focus on work accomplishments, not job duties. If you’re like most job seekers, your résumé lists what you were responsible for at each job you held, but doesnt explain what you actually achieved there. Rewriting to focus on accomplishments will make it more likely to catch a hiring manager’s eye. For instance, get rid of lines like “managed email list” and replace them with lines like “increased email subscribers by 20 percent in six months” – in other words, something that explains how you performed, not just what your job was.

  3. Get rid of big blocks of text. If your résumé is filled with large blocks of text – as opposed to bullet points – there’s a good chance that you’re putting hiring managers to sleep. They want to quickly skim the first time they look at your résumé, and big blocks of text make that difficult and make most hiring managers’ eyes glaze over. They’ll pay more attention and absorb more information about you if your résumé is arranged in bullet points rather than paragraphs.

  4. Shorten it. If your résumé is multiple pages, you might be diluting the impact of its contents. With a shorter résumé, you’ll ensure that in an initial quick scan, the hiring manager’s eyes fall on the most important things. Plus, long résumés can make you come across as someone who can’t edit and doesn’t know what information is essential and what’s less important. As a general rule, your résumé shouldn’t be longer than two pages, maximum. (And if you’re a recent grad, it should only be one page, because you haven’t yet had enough work experience to justify a second one.)

  5. Give yourself permission to remove things that don’t strengthen your candidacy. You don’t need three lines explaining boring job duties – especially if these responsibilities are going to be implied by your title. Similarly, you don’t need to include that summer job from eight years ago, that job you did for three weeks that didn’t work out or every skill you can think of. Your résumé is a marketing document, not a comprehensive listing of everything about you; include the things that strengthen your candidacy and pare down the rest.

Here are three tips for explaining an employment gap:

  1. Be honest and upfront. Trying to lie or bluff your way through isnt the way to do things, and to be perfectly honest, most good hiring managers will see straight through you. Explain the circumstances of the gap in an honest and straightforward manner.

  2. Think outside the box. If youre between jobs and youre worried itll end up being an extended gap, consider doing voluntary work. This will give you something recent to put on your resume. You should also consider taking relevant courses. This shows you are an ambitious individual who is always looking to improve their skill set.

  3. Explain the skills you picked up while you were out of employment. Many people think that offices and classrooms are the only place where you learn things, but this simply isnt true. For example, if youve spent time away from the workforce looking after your children, focus on the strengths you needed, such as discipline, organization, and the ability to multitask. "If you have traveled, you may have picked up international knowledge, which would be useful for a business looking to increase its global presence," Caan explains.

Make the hiring manager aware of all your skills, and explain how theyre relevant and how theyll help in the job you are applying for.

Although your résumé is definitely important, the cover letter can also be a make-or-break factor. Before you even get an interview, your application will have to impress the recruiter or hiring manager, so perfecting your cover letter is key to earning a face-to-face meet. Here are some tips for a perfect cover letter that will catch any recruiters eye:

  1. Tweak your tone for every company.

Dont send generic cover letters that can be used for any job application. You want to make sure that the tone of your letter fits the type of firm youre applying to. Is the company looking for someone with sass or someone more serious? Figure that out on your own, and tailor your letter to what suits the company.

  2. Make a case.

You wont be able to get to this on your résumé, so be sure to make the case for why youre the right person for the job and why you want to work for the company on your cover letter. A good way to sell yourself is to connect your experiences with the job description. List your skills and experiences that match the type of candidate they are looking to hire.

  3. Be different.

Dont repeat everything on your résumé in your cover letter. The letter is your chance to shine and show a bit of your personality. Repeating whats already been said just takes up valuable space.

  4. Dont bring up your weaknesses.

If no one is asking you what your biggest failings are, then dont be so eager to volunteer that information. The cover letter is not the time to reflect on self-improvement; save that for the weakness question you may be asked during the interview.

  5. Focus on the company, not yourself.

Try your best to show that you care about the company and how you want to help it grow. Try to avoid using too much "I," and instead show how you can be a helpful addition to the company.

  6. Stick to the right length.

Limit yourself to a page, and try to stick to four paragraphs. The first should comprise an introduction, the position youd like to apply for, and a sentence briefly summarizing why youd like the job and why youre a perfect fit. The next two paragraphs should go on to mention applicable skills and specific achievements that further showcase how qualified you are for the job. You can even use some of the space to explain your suitability if it needs more details, such as why youre changing careers. The last paragraph should be a brief emphasis on why youre excited for the position and a place for you to thank the readers for their time and consideration. You can also make a polite mention of letting them know youll be in touch.

  7. Keep it clean.

Be sure to repeatedly edit your cover letter, and always have at least one other pair of eyes look it over. Check for grammar mistakes, run-on sentences, and spelling errors. Make sure everything is consistent. If you say "I am" in the first sentence, then dont suddenly switch to "Im" in the next.
